One of Konami's finest non-Gradius shooters on any platform, Axelay uses two viewpoints, which alternate throughout the game's six levels: the traditional side-scrolling view, and a birds-eye overhead view that shows off some impressive Mode 7. Though the game is still plenty tough, it's balanced enough to make it very playable. Plus there is no power-up capabilities, as you choose the three weapons you want to use at the beginning of the level. A superb shooter by all standards (also note that the same team that created Axelay left Konami later to form Treasure, who made Radiant Silvergun for the Saturn - considered by some to be the best shoot-em-up of all time.)
