GAMES OF THE WORLD
Documenting the entire planet's history of videogames, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe.

Hard hitters from Scotland - by Mitchell Jarvie (2010)

I live in Scotland. Yeah, the country where everyone wears a kilt and throws tree trunks at each other.

But seriously, here in Scotland we have quite an expansive games industry. Our capital, Edinburgh, was home to a little developer called 'DMA Design' which created the Lemmings games, Uniracers and Body Harvest on the N64. Later in 2000 they changed their name to Rockstar North and well... Then they made a little series called Grand Theft Auto. Also, the city of Dundee is home to Realtime Worlds, the developers of Crackdown.

So yeah, my homeland sure has some heavy-hitters under its belt. The photo at the top of the page is of the Rockstar North building.

Editor's Note: what astounds me is how few people realise that the Grand Theft Auto games, a series based on American culture, is in fact a Scottish creation. And they've managed to pull off the cultural immitation rather effectively. Scotland, more specifically Glasgow, is also the home of Consolevania, a slightly eccentric though almost always excellent web-based videogame show, staring Rob and Ryan. It was later superceded by VideoGaiden.

Classic puzzle game Lemmings, by the same company which would later bring us Grand Theft Auto.

Every polygon in here is Scottish. Probably.
